Me & My Bodyshaper...

I never thought in a million years that my Spanx or body shaper was going to be my holy grail. Yes...I said it! My spanx or body shaper has been a saving grace for me over the years. Every time you see me in a nice dress, gown, or pants suit, etc. just know that my spanx is there to bring the smoothing effect to the outfit. Until I reach my goal weight.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a beautiful dress that brought out all of the curves. But I quickly noticed that I needed my Spanx or bodyshaper to help me get the desired look I needed. If you would like to know why I love my body shaper so much why my shaper is needed regardless of what I wear.

History of Shapewear

(Facts by Genevieve Carlton)

DID YOU KNOW!

  • Steel corsets, whale bones, and girdles have defined the history of shapewear. For thousands of years, women have manipulated their bodies to fit fashion trends.

  • In ancient Rome, women bound their busts to match the ideal of a small-chested, large-hipped figure. In the Victorian era, women became obsessed with the "wasp waist," using corsets to shrink their waists down to 16 inches.

  • And flappers achieved a boyish figure thanks to hip-slimming girdles.

Shapewear has even changed history. During WWI, the US government asked women to stop wearing corsets because they used so much valuable steel. Women listened, and they freed up enough steel to build two ships. In the past, shapewear wasn't just for date nights.

In the 1950s, housewives were warned not to take off their girdles when vacuuming. Victorian women wore corsets so often that doctors worried they were permanently damaging their bodies. And women even wore shapewear to the beach. From ancient Mesopotamia until today, women have used shaping garments to fashion their bodies. (Facts by Genevieve Carlton)

Who invented the spanx or body shaper?

Sara Treleaven Blakely is the founder of spanx, an American intimate apparel company with pants and leggings, founded in Atlanta Georgia. Sara Blakely was getting ready for a party when she realized she didn’t have the right undergarment to provide a smooth look under white pants. Armed with scissors and sheer genius, she cut the feet off her control top pantyhose and the SPANX revolution began! With a focus on solving wardrobe woes, the SPANX brand has grown to offer bras, underwear, leggings, active and more. (Spanx.com)

Without a bodyshaper

What is Spanx or Body Shaper?

Body Shapers or Spanx are undergarments, etc. that should be worn underneath your clothes. My undergarments are my go-to for a nice smooth look in my outfits. I've noticed that most people will allow their bellies, rolls, dents to just hanging without any care in the world. Growing up, my mom always encouraged my sister and I to wear the proper shapewear regardless of our size. She stated that all women young and old should wear undergarments that complement their outfits and shape.

What are the benefits of a Spanx or body shaper?

When I think of a good shaper, I think of an undergarment that promotes a slimming effect and helps you look beautiful in your clothes. (Julia Guerra)

Why is it important?

When you buy the right size. The slimming lycra in shapewear will hug your body in all of the right places, so there's no need to go down a size. If you're thinking that a smaller option will give you an extra boost, think again. The body shapers are designed to enhance your silhouette according to your true size. (Julia Guerra )

With a Body Shaper

My relationship with my shaper...

The relationship that a woman goes through with their body shaper is a love & hate type of emotion lol... Honestly, putting on my shaper is a pain in the butt but once you finally get it on you feel like that wasn’t so bad lol... My shaper gives me comfort and provides a level of snatchness I need lol..

Do you know your body type?

According to Healthline, a 2004 study reported that descriptions of female bodies have historically been described in categories based on shapes, such as triangle, rectangle, diamond, oval, and hourglass. Some of the most common general categories include:

  • inverted triangle or “apple”: if your shoulders and bust are larger than your relatively narrow hips, you have what’s known as an inverted triangle or “apple” shape

  • hourglass: If your hips and bust are nearly equal in size and you have a well-defined waist that’s narrower than both, you have an hourglass shape.

  • rectangle: If your waist measurements are about the same as your hip or bust, and your shoulders and hips are about the same width, you have what’s called a “banana” or rectangle body type

  • round: If your bust is larger than the rest of your body, your hips are narrow, and your midsection is fuller, you have what’s usually called a round or oval body type.

  • diamond: If you have broader hips than shoulders, a narrow bust, and a fuller waistline, you have what’s called a diamond body shape. With this type, you may carry a little more weight in your upper legs. You may also have slender arms.

  • athletic: if your body is muscular but isn’t particularly curvy, you might have an athletic body type. Your waist is narrower than your shoulder and hips, but it isn’t overly-defined and looks more straight up and down.

How do you wash your bodyshaper or Spanx?

Always hand-wash in a bucket of warm water, using a mild shampoo or baby shampoo. Rinse well and hang dry. Once it is completely dry, store it in a dark area. - You can wash non-latex garments in the washing machine using the gentle or hand wash cycle in cold water, with a full load.
